Using microsoft money file on a different computer

As you rightly surmise you can't read a file produced by Money version n
into Money version n-1.
Your M2007 license allows you to have two copies installed for personal use.
So one on your laptop and one on your new computer is OK.

Install M2007 on the new computer and copy the .mny file from the laptop to
a memory stick; take that to the new computer and copy to your hard disk.
Then with My Computer or Windows Explorer navigate to where you placed the
..mny file (best location is in My Documents) and double click on the file
name. That will start Money.

Reverse the process when you want to take the .mny file back to the laptop.

Thank you. I will try it when I become tired of using my laptop.
Actually, I was hoping to use the "new" Money 2006 on my new computer
for a year before upgrading to Money 2007 since you can only use Money
for 2 years (for the online services). As it stands now, I will
continue to use the installed money 2007 on my laptop and then
switchover to my new computer. It will just be inconvenient since I
use my new computer 95% of the time now and rarely use my laptop and I
guess I will soon become tired of doing so.

When I couldn't open the file, I started to read through the help and
saw things mentioned like you can only open the file on the computer
that it was originally made for security reasons. And that you could
"share" your files for certain accounts. But that would help me with
my "cash" account that has 3 years of data. Anyway, thank you for your
help and kindness.
