Good morning folks:
I currently use MS Money 2006 (Deluxe). Before the end of the year I am
buying a new computer and of course I will purchase MS Money Plus Deluxe
(also know as Money 2008) as part of the software package on the new machine.
My hope is to simply make a final copy of my current Money (2006) file onto
my memory stick and insert the stick into my new box. That will be followed
by opening Money Plus on my new machine. I hope to go to "file-open" and
find my old 2006 file. That, of course I HOPE, will be followed by Money
Plus simply opening my 2006 file. I want to assume Money Plus will make any
and all necessary conversions and I will be off and running.
My question is I used the words "hope" and "assume" several times...so do I
have anything to be concerned about?

In Vista, whenever you want to install something, you will
right-click the installation file and choose RunAsAdministrator.
Be sure that your Money and backup files are copied to a spot that
you will have full privileges to, such as Documents/MyDocuments.
If they are in a place like ProgramFiles, Vista will create an
impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user
explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdministrator
that time. Read up on "File Virtualization" if you want the
underlying reasoning.
Right-click the Money icon and choose RunAsAdmistrator the first
time to let potential updates happen. |

Cal:
Thank you. However, I am assuming that when I buy my new computer Dell will
install MS Money Plus BEFORE it ever arrives on my doorstep.
I'm thinking...and please advise if doing so incorrectly...that I (1) simply
copy (from my memory stick) my old MS Money 2006 Deluxe file to My Documents
and (2) launch my new MS Money Plus, go to file-open and click on the old MS
Money 2006 file.
What am I missing? Again, please advise.

You should be OK. Assuming that M2006 and MPlus are both from the same
region i.e. both US.
If your new PC is running Vista make sure that you copy the .mny file to
somewhere where you have unrestricted access such as Documents/My Documents.

That's it.
For future use, note the main group for Microsoft Money is
microsoft.public.money. microsoft.public.moneycentral is more MSN
Money / MoneyCentral.
