|
|
I know that this is an oft-repeated question, but I've tried to do my
homework before writing to the group; I just cannot get this working. The
details follow....
after installing the deluxe toolbox. The update arrows rotate for a minute
or two, and then fails. Clicking on "Learn More" gives two messages:
MSN Money Synchronization
- "Your call was successful: 1/24/2008 12:57 PM
Quotes, News, and Exchange Rates
- Your last call encountered an error: 1/23/2008 12:57
- Money was unable to connect to te online quotes server. Check your
Internet connection and try the operation again.
I know that the portfolio itself is OK, since I can pull it up (including
the deluxe toolbox) on several other systems. Some of these systems have MS
Money installed, and some don't. (The laptop with the problem does not have
Money installed.) What's more, my portfolio has the same problem on his
laptop. Together, these facts eliminate a certain class of potential
problems, like checking to see if there is a problem with one or more stock
symbols, or checking to see if the MSN network is up.
Notes:
- The problem has existed for over a year. At this point, it is impossible
to say what precipitated it -- but it's worth noting that the portolio
manager _used to_ work on this laptop.
- The laptop is running XP Pro (SP2) and is fully patched, with IE 7 (also
fully patched).
- The laptop is running Norton Protection Center.
- The laptop does not have MS Money installed.
I've tried cleaning _everything_ out, as follows:
1) Close IE.
2) Uninstall the toolbox using Add/Remove Programs.
3) Delete the entire "Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Money"
directory
4) Delete the portfolio backups in "My Documents"
5) Reduce the resolution and color depth of my screen
6) Reset IE to original settings using "Tools | Inernet Options | Advanced
| Reset"
7) Reboot
Disable as much of Norton as I can (Firewall, Spyware protection, etc.)
9) Bring up the portfolio in IE, and re-install the toolbox.
This process is an amalgamation of several sources, including the
oft-referenced "How to troubleshoot problems with investment quotes"
Alas, it still doesn't work. Norton's log doesn't report that anything is
being blocked, either. My next step may be to install WireShark and compare
the packet traffic between this system and one that works, but before I do
that I'm putting in a plea to the MSN community; what simple thing am I
missing?
Thanks in advance for any help or hints you can provide.

Whups! I guess I cut off the first couple of lines. That second paragraph
should read: My friend has a laptop on which he cannot update portfolio
quotes after he installs the deluxe toolbox. The update arrows rotate for a
minute or two, and then the update fails. Clicking on "Learn More" gives two
messages:

The most comment problem causing that is the server is having problems, not
your computer. It's best to keep trying for a few days. If no change, run
Belarc Analysis which you can download free. Its shows all the service packs
and marks any that are bad. If you see any then re-install them.
I already had the deluxe running for many years on my computer and about a
year ago the updated stopped same as you are seeing. I am fairly well versed
in computers and spent a lot of time in tracking down this problem but
couldn't solve it. Then for a completely different reason I had to
re-install Windows XP2 and did all the service pack updates to get it up to
current.
When completed, one of the first things I tried was the deluxe moneycentral
update and it worked perfect! It indicates there was a problem with one of
the updates (an activeX probably) that affected the deluxe toolbar and for
an unknown reason the update had been damaged. Re-install Windows may fix
your problem also. Note: this is NOT a complete fresh install and it doesn't
loose everything already on the system

Thanks for your response.

I've read that -- but at any given time we're able to get the updates on
every computer but this one. So that's not the problem.
> run Belarc Analysis which you can download free.
Great idea! Alas, aside from the usual security configuration warnings,
Belarc doesn't think that there's anything wrong with the system. Though
some of the older hotfixes didn't verify, so I may play with those. It's
just worrisome to put in a patch that's 3 or 4 years old, not knowing if it
will affect something else.

It's good to know I'm not alone in this.

I like this -- but after a re-install one frequently needs to re-add drivers
or reinstall 3rd-party apps. And this computer has items on it that were
installed at his workplace, so he would need to tell them "I can't update my
MoneyCentral Portfolio so I blew away all your software. Could you reinstall
it?" I don't imagine this would go over real well.
If I could get a good drive-image backup first, I might try this anyway --
but I'm having some problems there as well. I'll probably have to take out
his hard disk and mount it in my desktop and do an image there.
If it were my system, I would just reload it and be done with all
this. In the meantime, I'll noodle around a bit and hope for for someone to
come along and say "try reinstalling *this* patch." |

When I re-loaded Windows the only programs that had to be re-installed where
some Microsoft programs (Office, etc). All other programs I had installed
worked.
The moneycentral backup files were not touched and I had everything back
immediately.
I run Belarc about once-a-month and reinstall any flagged as bad. I agree
with you about those old ones but rather than take a chance I re-install
before something goes wrong.

I eventually got a successful image backup of the hard disk (two of them,
actually) and reinstalled XP as per your advice. I also redid all the steps
outlined in my original message. I'm still in the same place I was when I
started. I'm not sure a full reload is possible on this box, but it begins
to seem like thoe only option left.
I've even got a bigger problem -- the COM system isn't initializing properly
now and I can't apply Windows updates. I think there is an SP-2 related
problem here - so I'm going to try one last thing: restore the original O/S,
reinstall using XP with _no_ service packs (if it iwll let me), and then
build up the system from there.
I don't hold much hope for this to work -- but I'm grasping at straws.
